Cosmo’s Fun Fearless Females: Samantha Scott-Blackhall, theatre director

Samantha may have been directing plays for 10 years now, but her love for the arts and theatre is not about to wane any time soon. She’s known for directing gritty plays such as Quills in 2006, which featured full-frontal nudity for a full hour, and she enjoys the challenge of helming plays that deal with the darker side of humanity.

How has the industry changed since you started 10 years ago?

I’m pleased to see that there so many more female directors these days in both theatre and film. I believe women are able to strike that balance between being firm and being sensitive, which makes them good at what they do.

What motivates you?

A whole lot of creative passion! Even after 40 productions, I can honestly say I can’t see myself doing anything else. I’d like to keep going for another 50 years.

Any advice for girls hoping to make a career out of the arts?

First, learn to live within your means – this is not an industry that will make you a millionaire, but it’s an immensely rewarding one. There will be many times you’ll feel down and even tempted to give up, but don’t. Push yourself through those dark moments and I guarantee you’ll emerge a stronger person for it.
